MANCHESTER SQUARE

Beautifying a unique shopping development.

Client: 76Group Location: Edmonton, Alberta, CanadaProject Type: Hand painted murals Date Completed: September 2020

Manchester Square is a unique and visually iconic shopping re-development by 76Group, newly established in 2020. It is located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada just north of the downtown core. Formerly a warehouse, this innovative space was converted and expanded into a coveted shopping destination that is home to a variety of local shops and businesses. Inspired by the style of European architecture, Manchester Square is a charming and memorable retail location adored by local Edmontonians.

Two murals were commissioned for the project, one on the West side and one on the East side of the development. Both were painted on the original walls of the former warehouse. For the client, each mural had similar, but different goals in mind. Together, these murals work in harmony to beautify and add character to this stylish shopping destination.

THE FLORAL WALL
70 x 24 ft hand painted mural on the west side of Manchester Square.

Client requested that the mural bring beauty and positivity to the community while complimenting the aesthetic of the building. The rest was left to my creative freedom. The mural is painted in a trick-of-the-eye abstract style where from up close it appears to be just blocks of colour but from a far the illusion of flowers over grown on the wall is created.

THE LADY OF Manchester Square
24 x 24 ft hand painted mural on the east side of Manchester Square.

Given creative freedom, I carried over similar subject matter and colour palette from the west mural for a unison feel while creating a completely different tone to better suit the location of the wall. All along, with the same goal of complimenting the aesthetic of the building. The mural is painted in a trick-of-the-eye abstract style where from up close it appears to be just blocks of colour but from a far a woman’s face, peonies, and butterflies can be seen.Â
